Sorry for the lack of posts
I’ve been having Internet issues - wherein I have no Internet in my room, and I really cannot be bothered to write anything extensive from the kitchen table. It just doesn’t bode well for my ~creative institution. In other news, I’ll be stepping foot on a plane to Budapest, Hungary in 5 hours and will be there for 6 days. I’m not bringing my computer along because...

06 Mai 2010: No picture. No post. My day was spent in and out of consciousness due to illness. Because of that, this is all you get. Please, please. Camouflage your disappointment.

Last night a guy tried to hit on me by telling me...
clondon: I responded with “Oh really? My grandparents had to flee Germany because they were Jewish. So there’s that.” Sometimes it’s necessary to lie.

In attempt to utlilise this Tumblr better,
I have decided to instate a new format. Every night at 9.07 my time I’m going to take a photo - wherever I am, whatever I’m doing. I will then post that photo along with an anecdote, challenge, and German word/phrase learnt during the day. I will also once a week bore you with a short essay of sorts as seen in previous posts. Side notes may also still exist. Haven’t really...

The 11 year old I au pair for made a Hitler joke...
The 6 year old was doing a Michael Jackson dance when the 12 year old was all “its like Hitler!” and then did a moonwalk and ended in the heil pose. Our joint laughter at the face of a Hitler joke really brought us together.

Coincidence?
I have been having a hard time sleeping through the night. Every night I wake up at 3am on.the.dot. It’s been happening for about 9 days now. Someone I follow on my other Tumblr (belljars) says the same has been happening to her, and that 3am is supposed to be the Devil’s time. Last night, whilst walking down the Straße in Sternschanze, an elderly, drunken, German man stopped in his...

Miss Communication
I hold a degree in Communication Arts*, please keep your thoughts of Communication majors to yourself. I know all the jokes - I even wrote some of the jokes. But, communication is really a tricky thing, especially when you’re halfway across the world surrounded by people whose first language is not the same as yours. I have found myself in a bit of a situation with communication, both with...

Like, Totally.
Was reminded of why I’m so embarrassed by Americans abroad today. Whilst on line at Duane Reade Boots Budni, a group of three-college aged girls came up behind me. Two were American, the other while not German was of some European country (my best guess is Russia). I had my headphones in, and the two Americans still seemed like they were yelling. I mean like, I can understand German, but I...

Soggy St. Pauli
Couchsurfing is a community which enables travellers to meet locals, offer up their apartments/houses for people who would rather not stay in a hotel/hostel, and stay in other couchsurfers apartments/houses. When I tell Americans about it, they often cringe and say “So, like, you let strangers into your home?! Aren’t you afraid they’ll steal from you?! Or murder you?!” But,...

Sidenote
I never went through proper Customs on this trip. Having a layover in Zürich seems to be a little cheat in the system. I was fully expecting to have to pick up my luggage, go through Customs, only to have to go through security again. Instead, I was directed to a Transfer Zone where I went through a small security with only my carryons, followed by an even smaller Customs where I was just asked...

All Your Dreams Are MAde When Your Chained To A...
I met another American au pair today. I was a bit hesitant as Americans abroad and I don’t normally get along*. With a preconceived notion of a slightly ditzy, Typical American in my head, I met Sara with caution. I was pleasantly surprised to find we were of the same breed. Sara graduated university and interned in the fashion industry throughout. We have similar backgrounds - family,...
